How to Throw a Party with a DJ

The "Sound" part of Texas Pro Sound & Video means several things: audio engineering, live sound reinforcement, and also mobile entertainment. TXPSV started out as a mobile entertainment company before branching out into other digital media services like video and photo. Although we work more often in the video/photo realm, we still know how to throw a great party with our mobile DJ work.

This was evident on Saturday night as we worked a birthday party for a local gentleman who turned 50. He asked for a dance party, and he certainly got more than he bargained for! We were asked to play dance and party music from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today -- quite a tall order! The party was a great success and everyone was exhausted from dancing by the end of the night.

When throwing a "DJ" party, there are certain things you should talk about with your host. By making sure everyone is one the same page as to exact start and end times, genres of music, special requests, and more, there will be no surprises and things will run much smoother.

Things to talk about in pre-party planning:

Exact start time: The DJ will need to know exactly when you want to start playing music. Often, this means dinner music or other low-key, quieter music as the guests arrive and have time to chat. The host will need to arrive at least an hour to two hours in advance to set up speakers and lighting. Sometimes the host may ask to set up further in advance if the venue allows.
Party time: At some point in the evening, the music will need to be cranked up, lights turned on, so the party can really get started.
Genres of Music: What type of music are you looking for? Oldies, 70s, 80s, 90s pop? Modern dance hits? Hard rock? Disco? There are endless possibilities and combinations of genres available. TXPSV maintains a library of 35,000+ tracks to choose from.
Requests/Do Not Play List: How should the DJ handle requests from the audience? Do you have any specific song requests? Also, the DJ can get a list of songs that you definitely do not want played.
Toasts, speeches, etc.: The DJ will need to be prepared if anyone is planning on making a toast or doing any kind of speaking using the DJ's equipment. Let him know if you prefer a wireless microphone for these speeches.
Security, Management, Etc.: Recently at one of our DJ gigs, an uninvited guest tried to steal some coats from near the door. We need to know who is in charge in case something like this happens. Also, occasionally a guest will have a little too much to drink, and we need to be aware of how to handle these scenarios.
Exact end time: Of course, if we could, we'd play all night, but we do need to specify an end time in advance. Be aware that it takes an hour or so to break down and load up equipment, so plan accordingly.
Overtime: Many times, when the end of the night is approaching, the host of the party may want to extend our playing time. This is hard on the DJ when he doesn't know about it well in advance, because playlists are based on the timing of the end time. However, if the DJ is available to go later, ask about the extra time/overtime rates.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask the DJ. Weddings bring about all sorts of other considerations, but that's for another blog entry!

A new video blog, news site, and knowledge wiki is now active. KerrVideo.com is a brand new site owned and operated by Aaron Yates of Texas Pro Sound & Video. The site is composed of two parts -- a news blog and a wiki site.

The news blog will feature stories of interest about the Texas hill country, Kerr County, and Kerrville. A special effort will be made to include lots of video content that features the area of interest.

A wiki site is begin developed at kerrvideo.com/wiki and will feature background information on politicians, local leaders, government, and other general news and intelligence. The site has 140 pages already completed to date, and more are added every day!

UGRA Water Enhancement Video Project

In 2008, we began working on a film for the Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA). The film is now nearly complete, and will be presented to the UGRA Board of Directors on January 27.

Titled Water Enhancement through Brush Management: Reclaiming Resources, the film discusses the control of the ashe juniper tree, known locally as the cedar tree, and how control of that species improves the quality and quantity of water resources.

Tivy Homecoming 2009

Texas Pro Sound & Video will be filming some of the Homecoming festivities, including parts of Thursday's parade and bonfire. We will also, of course, be covering the football game on Friday night, when the Antlers (1-2, 1-0) will host district opponent Seguin (2-2, 0-1).

Look for us along Water Street covering the parade, and then down in Louise Hayes Park for the pep rally and bonfire. We'll post video footage of the events over the weekend on our video site, www.vimeo.com/kerrville.

Tivy Football Offerings for This Year

Greetings, sports fans. Once again, Texas Pro Sound & Video will be filming the Tivy Antler Football season. We are very excited to be a part of the season again this year, and we wish the Antlers luck as they come off of one of the most successful years ever last year.

Once again we will be offering highlight videos to parents, players, and fans. However, this year we will not be printing full-color DVDs and cases every week as we have in the past. This year we will distribute the highlights each week on Fridays (after the team sees them on Thursdays) and we will also deliver a full color DVD and case at the end of the year that will include all the games and special features.

The Antlers are 0-2 to start the season, but they're improving every week. This Friday is an off week, and then the Antlers will start district when they travel to Boerne. Stay tuned for video highlights and updates!

TXPSV to Film Tivy High School Graduation 2009

Texas Pro Sound & Video has contracted with Kerrville ISD to film and produce the Tivy High School Graduation for the Class of 2009.

TXPSV will oversee a multi-cam shoot of the ceremony on May 29 at Antler Stadium in Kerrville. Soon after, a DVD will be available for sale through our website at www.txpsv.com/tivy.

The DVD will include all of the graduation festivities from the pre-ceremony through the end of the night. Each disc will be packaged professionally and will include a full color jacket and printed DVD. Each disc will sell for $15.00 plus shipping, or you can pick it up for free at our office.

Football Honors

Aaron Yates from Texas Pro Sound & Video was honored last night by Tivy football coach Mark Smith with a medal commemorating Tivy's run to state semi-finals in 2008. Coach Smith thanked TXPSV for its service and commented on the videos that we've provided each week for the team.

After the honors were handed out, TXPSV provided parents and players one last video highlighting our eight favorite moments of 2008. The video, which was viewed by approximately 200 people, received a standing ovation. But the ovation was not for the producers, but for the players who made these amazing videos possible in the first place. Without their talent, skills, and sportsmanship, we couldn't make the videos as entertaining as they have become.

Congrats to Tivy for an outstanding season in 2008.

Tivy headed to State Quarterfinals

The Tivy Antlers are on their way to Buda this weekend to face Pflugerville in the State Quarterfinals for UIL 4A Division II. There are only eight teams left in state, and Tivy has hopes of reaching the state finals for the first time ever in football.

The Antlers will leave Friday morning at 9 AM, and fans are encouraged to line Sidney Baker to support the team as they depart.

UGRA Project Begins

Texas Pro Sound & Video began filming for the UGRA documentary yesterday. The yet-to-be-titled work will be about two cedar-clearing projects in Kerr County -- one on Johnson Creek in Mountain Home and one on Upper Turtle Creek, south of Kerrville. The two landowners have agreed to let TXPSV film the progress of the clearing and see how it affects springflow on the properties. If the project is successful, the springs on the properties will increase their flow, thereby eventually providing more water to the Guadalupe River, to the benefit of all.

Texas Pro Sound helped the Guadalupe RV Park produce their third concert of the year on the Guadalupe Stage in Kerrville. The river provided the backdrop for a show consisting of Wes Creech of Kerrville followed by the Lloyd Bonham Band of Boerne.

Tivy Starts Off Strong

The Antlers traveled to Comalander Stadium at Blossom Athletic Complex in San Antonio for their first regular season game versus San Antonio Roosevelt Roughriders. The Antlers' offense put up 49 points to defeat the Roughriders 49-28.

From the Kerrville Daily Times:

Behind almost 400 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns from Tivy senior quarterback Colton Palmer, the Antlers cruised past a much larger Rough Riders squad that came into this season with high expectations.

“We’re excited as can be,” Tivy coach Mark Smith said. “To come here, play a Northeast school and play the way we did, it’s a big plus for us. It gives us a starting point.”

Palmer helped power the Antlers’ offense by completing an almost perfect 29-of-32 night, throwing for 321 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran for two scores and caught another.

“Once we got in that rhythm, we just started clicking and just started rolling and it was easy,” Palmer said.

TXPSV to Document UGRA Projects

Texas Pro Sound & Video will soon film a documentary project for the Upper Guadalupe River Association in Kerrville. Filming will begin in September and the production will take approximately four to six months.

The UGRA will be clearing land on two pieces of property in hopes of creating additional groundwater resources in the area. By removing cedar trees and other brush from the properties, groundwater in the area will be freed and hopefully will come to the surface in the form of a spring.

TXPSV will be conducting interviews and filming the progress of the project beginning next month.

Tivy Football Returns in '08

The Antlers had a very successful season last year and they hope to repeat their success while facing a new district lineup this fall. Texas Pro Sound & Video has been contracted to film all 10 regular season games for Tivy, as well as the playoffs.

The districts were realigned by the UIL for the 2008 season, just as the organization does every two years now. Tivy's new district includes Boerne, Alamo Heights, New Braunfels Canyon, Seguin, San Marcos, Cibolo Steele, and Scherz-Clemens. This district will be tough, but the Antlers are up to the challenge.

Ingram High School Graduation

Texas Pro Sound & Video was on hand on Saturday, May 31, to record the graduation ceremony for Ingram Tom Moore High School. The ceremony for the Class of 2008 (load up!) was held at the Ingram Tom Moore football field on the grounds of Ingram ISD.

TXPSV was hired by some thoughtful parents, but due to popular demand, the video will also be made available for others to purchase, as it is the only known video available to the Class of 2008 (load up!).

Baseball Season Around the Corner

As we move into the new year, Texas Pro Sound & Video is getting ready for baseball. As we have done since 2001, TXPSV will be providing live audio services for the Tivy High School baseball program in 2008.

Aaron Yates of TXPSV, along with his mother Vicki, a teacher at Tivy High School, will be on hand at each and every home game volunteering their services to the team. Aaron provides the equipment and media for the public address system at Antler Field, and Vicki showcases her talent as a public address announcer for the team.

Aaron and Vicki have worked together since Vicki came on board in 2005. The pair faithfully attend almost a dozen Antler home games per year, and also help operate the Hill Country Classic baseball tournament early each season, often hosting 20+ games per tournament!

Tivy Rolls Past Memorial

The Antlers get another one for the W column in district play. They are now preparing for the toughest games in district, with Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Alamo Heights next for Tivy.

Tivy beat Memorial 55-6 at Zappa Memorial Stadium in San Antonio on Friday night, extending their win streak to 7 games, and bringing their District 27-4A record to 2-0.

Antlers Top Lakeview

SAN ANGELO - Tivy wreaked havoc on San Angelo Lakeview's homecoming celebration on Friday night, beating the Chiefs 38-13. Although it was not as pretty as the first two wins, a W is a W, as they say, and Tivy has started off the season 3-0. Next week brings New Braunfels to Kerrville, and the Antlers will be looking to extend their streak to 4 wins.

Antlers Blast the Judson Rockets!

Tivy won their home opener on Friday night, September 7, against the 5A Judson Rockets. The Rockets are ten time state champions, having won titles in 1983, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1995 and 2002.

The Antlers trailed at half-time 14-10, but the second half was all Tivy. After a wild third and fourth quarter, the Antlers came out on top 40-21.

Tivy Wins Season Opener

Tivy's regular season started off with a bang against 5A opponent San Marcos at Bobcat Stadium. The Antlers beat the Rattlers 23-14 Friday night, avenging last year's heartbreaking loss at home.

Tivy quarterback Colton Palmer chalked up 270 of Tivy's 276 yards of offense, and the Tivy defense picked three passes to take the Antlers to victory. On the opening drive, kicker Logan Vick hit a school record 51 yard field goal.

Texas Pro Sound & Video was on the sidelines videotaping the game. TXPSV is working in cooperation with athletic director and head football coach Mark Smith to produce a highlight film for the 2007 season. The video will be on sale at the end of the season and in time for the Fall Sports Banquet.

What is Multi-Camera Shooting?

Multi-camera shooting and editing simply means using more than one camera to obtain and produce a video. You see multi-camera use all the time, sometimes without even realizing it. For example, on TV, everything is shot with multiple angles. From your sitcoms to your sporting events, multiple camera angles makes for much more interesting footage compared to a single camera focused on an event.

What does that mean for your video production? TXPSV uses at least two cameras on every shoot. By switching back and forth between two cameras, a much more interesting story can be told. Also, when done correctly, two cameras can give the illusion of four or five camera angles, depending on the skill of the director and editor.

Drawer Boy

Despite heavy rains, the last weekend of the Drawer Boy started last night at Warrior Theater in Ingram, Texas. At times the sound was difficult to understand with the pounding rain smashing against the metal roof of the theater, but Texas Pro Sound & Video persevered, capturing the performance on High Definition film.

The play runs through the weekend, with the last show being Sunday, August 19.

Wedding Videography

The bride's big day has come. The flowers have been arranged, the cake is decorated, the band is ready at the reception, and the photographer is busy shooting stills to capture the memories from the wedding. One important element is still missing... A videographer has yet to be hired!

Videographers make the memories come to life. The bride will come down the aisle, they will say their “I do's,” the groom will kiss the bride, the father will dance with his daughter the bride, and the reception will be a hit. A Texas Pro videographer will attend your wedding rehearsal and map out a plan for capturing the event in the most comprehensive but unobtrusive manner possible, given the location. He will meet with your wedding planner and officiant to discuss the technical aspects of the videography.

Depending on your wishes, the videographer will travel to the various pre-wedding festivities and record the bride and bridesmaids getting ready (G-rated footage, of course!), the groom and groomsmen getting ready, and may interview your parents or friends in anticipation of the big day.

The videographer will arrive at your venue several hours before the wedding. The cameras roll about an hour prior to the start time, and the videographers record the seating of your family and friends. Using two or three professional quality cameras, every part of your ceremony is filmed. The cameraman will record the reactions of your family and faces from the audience while another is busy watching the happy couple and the wedding party, and recording the words of the officiant.

After the ceremony, Texas Pro will film the official pictures being taken, and will then rush to the reception venue to begin preparations for the reception. The entrance of the wedding party is captured, along with the first dance, toasts of the Best Man and Maid of Honor, cutting of the cake, dances with the parents, bouquet and garter toss, and the exit of the bride and groom, along with any other special events you have planned at your reception. The reception is also a great time to do informal interviews with family and friends, and to record the words of well-wishers on film for you to view when you return from your honeymoon.

Throughout the wedding day and at the reception, our staff is trained to be as unobtrusive as possible. We respect that the day belongs to the bride and groom, and our job is to record the event; not to make the “recording of the event” into the “event.” Because we will have met and discussed your wishes, we will be prepared to capture your special moments, but not be constantly in your way as you greet family and friends.

Texas Pro Sound and Video is committed to the highest moral and ethical standards. Your final video will only show you and your family at their best. Any unflattering or inappropriate footage will be discarded from the final video, and you will have final say over anything that is produced. Always, you are the Executive Producer of your wedding video, and we are always working for you!

Final Deliverable Products

At Texas Pro, we believe the key to an interesting and touching wedding production is creating strong deliverables. When you are sharing your wedding moments with friends and family in the future, not everyone will want to watch a feature-length film of your entire wedding day. What we recommend is that you allow us to produce a short five to ten minute highlight video of your special day, along with a feature-length (one to two hour) movie of your entire day. This way, you will have the option of sharing the full film or a shorter rendition.

Given this recommendation, we will produce for you a DVD (or VHS tape) separated into chapters in its own special packaging. When you insert your DVD into any standard DVD player, you will watch a short intro, and will be presented with the Main Menu. From this menu, you will be able to choose to view the highlight clip or the full video. If you choose the full video, you can also search by scene, so that you may pick one particular part of the video to watch instead of viewing the entire film.

You also have the option of including a photo montage at the beginning of your film. A photo montage is an animated slideshow set to the music of your choice (or have us pick for you). The photos usually include childhood shots of the bride and groom and their families. This is a nice special touch for a video, and this montage can also be used at your reception on a large-screen display. The large screen display can be set up with a projector at your reception and can silently display your adorable childhood photographs!

The Drawer Boy

Michael Healey’s The Drawer Boy swept Best Play and the top Canadian play awards when it debuted in 1999. Healey’s story of a young playwright cadging material for a play about farm life by living with two old farmers provides laugh out loud moments and sequences of deep sorrow. In the end it’s a play about enlightenment and redemption.

The Guadalupe Stage Quartet is pleased to bring this play for the first time to the Kerrville area at Warrior Theatre in Ingram, August 9-19. The Quartet is dedicated to bringing fine drama to area theatres while providing funds for a deserving theatre student through the Roy Burney Endowed Scholarship. The first two GSQ productions, Lend Me A Tenor and The Octette Bridge Club, provided over $5000 towards this project.

Texas Pro Sound & Video is happy to provide videography services for the play free of charge. (Disclaimer: The Guadalupe Stage Quartet does not have the rights to film and distribute copies of the production, so the video is only being used for "in-house" purposes.)

Tivy Football is Here!

The rain has ceased and the weather has turned hot, just in time for two-a-days at Antler Stadium. Coach Mark Smith (pictured, left) and the Antlers are preparing for another season of the gridiron. Tivy's first scrimmage is this Saturday, August 18, at Medina Valley.

This year, Texas Pro Sound & Video will be offering for sale a highlight video covering all of the big moments from Tivy's football season this year. We will be on the sidelines for all of the home games and as many of the away games as we can make. Look for the highlight video around the end of the season, as the Fall Sports Banquet approaches. UCA Cheer Camp

Texas Pro Sound & Video was on hand at the UCA Cheer Camp in Austin, Texas, on July 28. We filmed from early in the morning on until the afternoon inside "The Bubble" on the UT campus. Tivy had three cheer teams at the camp: Freshmen, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.
